Children’s Gardening
More and more children are getting involved in gardening. Its simple to grow flowers from seed with your children. If you are not too sure which flowers to select then choose from the suggestions below. Get your kids out into the garden sowing and creating a riot of colour.
When buying seeds for your kids to grow look for the words ‘Hardy Annual (HA) and ‘direct sow’ or ‘can be sown outdoors’. This means you do not have to sow in seed trays and transplant. The seeds can be sown directly in the ground in the garden because they are generally not affected by frost.
Sow when the soil begins to warm (often indicated by the emergence of weed seedlings). Weed the bed, level the soil with a rake and tread lightly before sowing. If you are going to grow more than one type of flower then divide the soil up into sections. Your flowers will grow best if thinned according to the instructions on the seed packet. Label the ground where you have sown.
Candy Tuft (Iberis umbellata)
Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)
Also look out for the chocolate cosmos which really does smell like the real thing. Children will love them.
Love in A Mist (Nigella damascena)

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)
Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis)
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)
